Constructive criticism is difficult for all of us, but is also a necessary component of the business world. When it is used as it should be, it can be a very effective tool to keep an office running smoothly and efficiently.
If you are the one in charge, you must and their interactions, so that relationships don’t get out of hand and employees don’t become so comfortable that work suffers. Of course, keeping the lines of communication open by meeting regularly with your employees and listening to their concerns will keep the need for corrective criticism to a minimum.
When a problem does arise, it is best to handle it as soon as possible, because procrastinating won’t make things any easier. Also, the longer a situation is allowed to progress, the more difficult and complex it will be to correct.
For example, if you have an employee who is aggressive, loud and pushy, you may lose several good workers if you let this person continue to bully others while trying to make up your mind on how to handle the situation.
In the end, no-one enjoys negative feedback, but if done in a way that shows reasonable expectations and sincere concern, along with attainable goals, it can bring improvement without lingering resentment and loss of trust.
