What kind of life have you been envisioning when you dream about starting your own business? Try to see your day-to-day existence as a business owner. Are you working on your own, or managing a team of carefully chosen employees? Are you meeting with clients and prospects all day, or working on projects behind-the-scenes? What time do you get up in the morning and how many hours do you spend in the office? How do your friends, family, and personal interests fit into the picture?

What type of company do you see yourself running? How big do you envision your company growing, one store, a regional chain, a nationwide franchise?  What industry do you want to work in? What kind of products or services do you plan to sell? How much money would you like to make? How many employees will you have?

 Once you’ve got all these questions figured out, consider whether the type of company you will start will actually give you the type of life that you desire. Suppose part of your reason for starting a business is so you can spend more time at home with your children, but you’ve always dreamed of starting a restaurant. There are some heavy conflicts here since a restaurant obviously can’t be run from home and typically demands long hours six or even seven days a week.

If your goals for your business and personal life aren’t in harmony, you need to determine what’s most important to you, only then will you be able to figure out how to adjust your business plan to get what you want. This isn’t always easy, but it is almost always possible.
